Von ihrer Struktur her seien Verlage sehr wohl in der Lage, lokal gegen Groupon anzutreten. „Nur müssen sie das Thema ernst nehmen“, kritisiert Greschner. Die Voraussetzungen für erfolgreiches Couponing könnten für die Zeitungshäuser seiner Ansicht nach kaum besser sein. „Wer hat in jeder Stadt die besten Kontakte zu Händlern? Seit hundert Jahren die Zeitung.“ All das müsse Groupon mit sehr viel Geld und unter hohen Verlusten erst aufbauen.
